How to Check Whether Indonesian Phone Numbers Are on WhatsApp
A step-by-step workflow for converting Indonesian local numbers to +62 and running a bulk WhatsApp registration check.
To check Indonesian numbers on WhatsApp, first convert every local 08xx number to international format by dropping the leading 0 and adding +62. Then put the numbers in a single-country file, one per line, and run a bulk WhatsApp registration check. The result is a registration signal at check time for that list, not proof of who owns the number or whether they will reply.
Why Indonesian lists need formatting first
Indonesian contacts are usually saved the way people dial them locally: 0812-3456-7890, 0812 3456 7890, or sometimes 62812... copied from a chat link. A checking workflow expects the country code on every line, so mixed styles are the most common reason a good list produces poor results.
The convention is simple. Local mobile numbers start with 08; the leading 0 is the national trunk prefix and is replaced by the country code 62. The international form is defined by the ITU’s E.164 numbering plan, which is why 0812-3456-7890 becomes +6281234567890.
| What you have | What it should become |
|---|---|
0812-3456-7890 | +6281234567890 |
0812 3456 7890 | +6281234567890 |
62812 3456 7890 | +6281234567890 |
0062 812 3456 7890 | +6281234567890 |
812 3456 7890 (no prefix at all) | Needs review: add 62 only if you know the number is Indonesian |
Step 1: Clean the Indonesian list before checking
Number Cleaner, a free tool in the dashboard Toolbox, normalizes phone numbers to E.164 and removes duplicates and invalid entries before a paid check. Running it first has two benefits: the file you upload is consistent, and you do not spend checks on rows that were never going to be usable.
When you prepare the file, keep these points in mind:
- One country per file. An Indonesian list should contain only Indonesian numbers. If your export mixes countries, split it first.
- One number per line, with the country code. The plus sign is optional.
- Remove obvious non-numbers such as notes, names, or extension text pasted into the same cell.
- Keep your original file. Save the cleaned list under a new name so you can match results back to your CRM later.
Step 2: Run the WhatsApp registration check
Upload the cleaned CSV or TXT file to the WhatsApp registration check in the dashboard, or use the REST API if the list comes from your own system. Both routes work on the same idea: each number is checked for a WhatsApp registration signal at the moment of the check.
Because results reflect check time, treat the output as a snapshot. A list checked today and reused months later will have drifted, so re-check older lists before an important campaign.
Step 3: Read the results without over-reading them
A registration signal tells you that a number is registered on WhatsApp, and therefore reachable on that platform, when it was checked. It does not tell you any of the following:
- who owns the number or whether it matches the name in your CRM;
- whether the person has agreed to be contacted;
- whether a message will be delivered, read, or answered.
A practical way to use the output is to segment the list: contact numbers with a registration signal through WhatsApp where you have a legitimate basis to do so, and route the rest to another channel such as email or SMS. Rows that come back undetermined are usually worth inspecting for formatting problems before you discard them.
Common mistakes with Indonesian number lists
- Leaving the leading 0 after the country code, producing
+620812.... The 0 must go. - Spreadsheet auto-formatting. Excel can turn
+62812...into a formula or strip the plus sign and convert long numbers to scientific notation. Store the column as text. - Mixing landlines and mobile numbers. Landline numbers will not be registered on WhatsApp; separate them if your list has them.
- Skipping consent. A registration signal is not consent. WhatsApp’s business messaging policy expects businesses to have opt-in from the people they message.
FAQ
How should an Indonesian 08xx number be written before a WhatsApp check?
Remove the leading 0 and add the country code, so 0812-3456-7890 becomes +6281234567890. The plus sign is optional in the upload file, but the country code must be present.
Can a list of Indonesian and other-country numbers be checked in one file?
Phone-list uploads use one country per file, so teams should split mixed lists by country and run each file separately.
Does a registered result mean the contact agreed to receive messages?
No. The result is a platform registration signal at check time. Consent has to be established and recorded separately by the sender.
What should teams do with undetermined rows?
Review them for formatting problems such as a stray leading zero or missing country code, correct them, and include them in a later run.
